Is there a connection between my pigs and Sir Winston Churchill?

by Fallowfields on August 30, 2010

Sir Winston has always been a firm favourite of mine, despite the tragic decisions he made both as First Sea Lord and as PM – the Dardanelles for one…but let us not go there. He was a great man, without whom the world would be a very much poorer place today.

Whenever I look at my Tamworth Boar, Thriller……………

Thriller, our Tamworth boar, down on the farm at Fallowfields Country House Hotel

………….I am always reminded of that great Churchill quote ….. “Always remember, a cat looks down on man, a dog looks up to man, but a pig will look man right in the eye and see his equal”. How true…pigs have no fear of man, they look you right in the eye and then walk straight through you…it takes more than a little practice to get a pig to go where you want it too. Make no bones about it, Thriller tolerates me because I bring him stuff, stuff like buns [home baked of course], and I give him pleasure, a scratch or two behind the ear works wonders. Yes he comes to my call but only because he knows he will get one or either or both of the above. But if I ever ever dare to get in between him and his food or his Mrs, then the good Lord help me…I will be superfluous and supernumary….probably only good for a tusking as he pushes me not so gently out of the way.

Why is is it I adore all 500lbs or so of him?

June 10 2011. Updated photographs of Thriller, now around 600 lbs in weight. Here we are moving him to spend a few weeks with Tabatha [his very first love].

And here is a few moments before, checking out our Dexter cattle. Clare is peeping slyly through the fence, Flame and Ulrik to her right.
